I arrived in Vietnam as a 19 year old PFC, fresh out of AIT at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. After a week of jungle training, I was assigned to the 1st Engr. Bn., 1st Infantry Division, stationed in Lai Khe. During the year I was there, we did a lot of mine sweeps, landing zone clearance, bridge and airstrip repairs, and land clearing for fire support bases. Spent the majority of time working out of fire support bases. Lot of engineering type work such as drainage problems, reinforcing TOC bunkers as well as running communication lines. We were tunnel rats when required, security when needed and handled body counts and removal due to booby trap danger. Was there from June/69 until June/70. Proud to serve and glad I was one of the lucky ones to return.
